  29. publishes all of his data. Budd Hopkins is one of the most respected research-
  30. ers in the history of UFO investigations. He deserves to have the benefit of
  31. the doubt in all attacks until he publishes the complete history of the Linda
  32. case. I will have more to say about this case in the future.

  144. I read your message and if you are really serious about your ufo's, here's a
  145. first hand account:
  146.  
  147. In 1968 I worked with my father on a wireline tug (we cleaned parafin buildup
  148. out of producing oil wells). I believe it was about June of 1968, we had pulled
  149. up to a well about 3 miles west of Point-a-la-Hache, Louisiana. At about 7:00
  150. am, my Dad, as was his practice, began cooking a stew for lunch. At about 8:30
  151. we hooked up to the well and were about to start "going down" with the cleaning
  152. tool.  To the East, on a bright, sunny, blue sky kind of day, we noticed what
  153. appeared to be an airplane.  It was very shiny. One problem...it wasn't moving.
  154.  We watched it in silence for what we thought was about 10 minutes.  At the end
  155. of the 10 minutes,  we shrugged it off, mainly because it disappeared.  I went
  156. to check the stew...it had burned completely to charcoal in the black iron pot.
  157. We checked our watches, It was 4:00 pm.
  158.  
  159. What happened?  We don't know.  We called Alvin Calendar Naval Air Base and
  160. reported the incident by phone.  They took the information but nothing ever
  161. came of it.  It seemed very strange, but we have not had any ill effects other
  162. than we don't talk about it, because everybody at the time thought we were
  163. nuts!  We lost almost a whole day.  Neither one of us have any memory of the
  164. event except that we agree on what it looked like....kind of cigar shaped with
  165. a tail or antennae on the right, that seemed to rotate to a center position
  166. prior to zooming away almost straight up.

  212. STORRS - Some people might give you incredulous arched eyebrows if you
  213. recounted how an alien craft beamed you aboard to undergo a mysterious
  214. physical exam by extraterrestrials creatures.
  215.  
  216. But Kenneth Ring wouldn't.
  217.  
  218. Ring, professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut, has
  219. probably listened to mores tales of flying saucer abduction than anyone
  220. from this world. He takes them seriously, but not literally.
  221.  
  222. Ring, the first researcher to systematically study the vivid visions and
  223. feelings of near-death experiences, became interested in descriptions of
  224. encounters with Unidentifed Flying Objects after reading a book about
  225. them in 1987.
  226.  
  227. Ring's latest studies are contained in "The Omega Project: Near-Death
  228. Experiences, UFO Encounters and the Mind at Large," a 320 page book
  229. recently published by William Morrow and Co.
  230.  
  231. Ring found that both groups -- people who have had a near-death
  232. experience and visits from aliens -- seem to have similar psychological
  233. profiles. People who've seen the pure white light of the afterlife or
  234. the large unblinking eyes of aliens are likely to report a history of
  235. child abuse, trauma and stress.
  236.  
  237. Both phenomena may be rooted in an unusually acute psychological
  238. sensitivity that not everyone shares, Ring says. Childhood abuse may
  239. arouse or trigger this sensitivity.
  240.  
  241. But Ring emphasizes that this is not necessarily a matter of brain
  242. chemistry or nuerology.
  243.  
  244. Flying saucers weren't observed until the first atom bomb was dropped,
  245. and some UFO encounters may be the result of anxiety about nuclear
  246. weapons and planetary destruction. Similarly, some who have near-death
  247. experiences may be responding to an increasingly impersonal and
  248. materialistic culture.
  249.  
  250. However, Ring favors a much more esoteric explanation -- one that many
  251. other psychologists won't touch with a 10-foot phaser:
  252.  
  253.         These people seem to be able to perceive another dimension
  254.         closed to the rest of us, a power that could mark a new stage in
  255.         the evolution of the mind, Ring says in an incongruously
  256.         matter-of-fact manner.
  257.  
  258. Ring is less interested in the blurry metaphysics of this strange world
  259. of imagination that in the measureable physical and psychological
  260. changes that emerge after a near-death experience or a UFO encounter.
  261.  
  262. "Is there any type of person who is especially susceptible to unusual
  263. encounters like near-death experiences or UFO encounters? What are the
  264. after effects?" Ring asked.
  265.  
  266. Ring stressed that he has no reason to believe that the planet is being
  267. visited by beings from other worlds. "I'm not convinced by any evidence
  268. that there are literal spacecraft coming to Earth to do nefarious things
  269. to humans," Ring said in his sparse office.
  270.  
  271. A more likely hypothesis is that the affected groups have brain
  272. anomalies, perhaps in the temporal lobe or limbic system, that permit
  273. them to have near-death experiences or UFO encounters he said.
  274.  
  275. Something real has happened to these people. It needs to be looked at.
  276. We have a mystery on our hands. Regardless of whether these experiences
  277. are blissful or bestial they transform people," Ring said.
  278.  
  279. Most scientists are convinced that the experiences seem real but are no
  280. more than a new kind of nuerological condition, or a sort of seizure.
  281.  
  282. It's difficult to assess the stories of tall thin aliens and elevation
  283. on light beams without knowing about the rest of the narrator's life,
  284. said Dr. Selby C. Jacobs, professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of
  285. Medicine.
  286.  
  287. "I still don't know what to make of it," Jacob said of a UFO encounter
  288. described by a heavy machine operator with a grade school education.
  289.  
  290. "It's not the type of thought content typical of delusional disorders.
  291. It's coherent, detailed, highly developed and too graphic," Jacobs said.
  292.  
  293. "I don't think there was a spaceship," Jacobs added. The man may have
  294. experienced an altered state of consciousness, or brought up a childhood
  295. trauma in disguise, he said.
  296.  
  297. "Something funny happened in his brain. I'm not sure it's pathological.
  298. I'm willing to accept it as within the realm of human experience,"
  299. Jacobs said.
  300.  
  301. Jerome L. Singer, professor of psychology at Yale, said near-death
  302. experiences and UFO abductions are legitimate to study as artifacts of
  303. the imagination. Victims of childhood trauma sometimes develop extreme
  304. bizarre fanatasies as adults, Singer said.
  305.  
  306. Ultimately, both phenomena may represent a strong fear of death through
  307. escape or the existence of an afterlife, Singer said.
  308.  
  309. Or perhaps, Ring said, the people who have these visions have somehow
  310. opened a window onto another reality -- the "imaginal realm" -- a kind
  311. of twilight zone altered state between thinking and dreaming.
  312.  
  313. "Suppose we were aware only of sunlight. Some people might say 'There's
  314. another world where sunlight is absent, with a black sky and stars and
  315. planets.' If we only lived in a solar consciousness we wouldn't know
  316. that exists," Ring said.
  317.  
  318. More to the point, people who say they've had near-death experiences or
  319. UFO abductions "see" objects that they couldn't have seen, Ring said. In
  320. one case a woman who was dead momentarily on an operating table floated
  321. above the roof of the hospital and saw a single gym shoe that later was
  322. found.
  323.  
  324. Others who have approached death have seen relatives they never knew or
  325. did not know about, Ring said.
  326.  
  327. "We don't have neurological theory to explain this," Ring said. Nor is
  328. there a way to explain why many of these people are left more sensitive
  329. to light, sound and other stimuli; with different blood pressure and
  330. temperature; different sleep patterns and a greater sense of social
  331. concern and spirituality.

  440. My name is Scott Colborn, Director of the Fortean Research Center in  Lincoln,
  441. NE.  I
  442.  I'm working on what appears to be an abduction case involving a Lincoln, NE,
  443. woman. She believes that she has been taken to an underground facility called
  444. Artesia. This underground facility is staffed by human  military personal and
  445. "alien" beings. An alien being that was a major player in her on-going contacts
  446. was for a time being held at this facility. Whether this "being" was being held
  447. to gauge her response and  evaluate a bonding, or whether this "being" actually
  448. was violating  prodedures with regards to emotional ties to this woman is
  449. conjecture. She has undergone hypnosis and through this process she has rememb-
  450. ered that she was taken to this facility to interact with hybrid children.
  451.  The woman described the terrain as slightly rolling, the temperature as being
  452. hot, with a water source nearby and some trees along or near the  water source.
  453.  I've done some preliminary research and concluded that the best "fit" to  the
  454. physical description given by the Lincoln woman is the area surrounding
  455. Artesia, New Mexico. (She was told by one of the "beings" that the name of the
  456. facility was "Artesia.")
  457.  The town of Artesia, New Mexico and the general area surrounding the town seem
  458. to fit her description.  I travelled through the area in July, `92, and the
  459. Pecos River is to the east of the town.
  460.  I would like to ask for assistance in several areas. First, are any of you
  461. familiar with an "Artesia" in your area?  It could be a name for an area, but I
  462. think it probably describes a city or town. Secondly, has anyone come across
  463. reports of abductions where an individual was taken to an area that might fit
  464. the "Artesia" description?  Thirdly, how about  reports involving what appear
  465. to be humans in fatigues interacting with  "aliens" in a facility in which
  466. hybrid children are kept?
  467.  I realize that the above information is sparse, sketchy and bare-bones. In
  468. researching this information I've had several interesting "responses" in the
  469. form of an unsigned letter warning me to cease and desist from my efforts to
  470. find out more about "Artesia." Additionally, during a radio program I host in
  471. Lincoln, NE, as a guest (William Hamilton) and I had just begun to talk about
  472. " the alien presence on Earth and rumored underground bases," the radio station
  473. went off the air. To make a long story longer, suffice to say that the engineer
  474. couldn't account for the  off-air occurance in terms of equipment failure. He
  475. believed that something had to have interrupted the power supply to the
  476. transmitter to trigger a protection circut to take it off-line.
  477. So, from the information from the Lincoln abductee, and the coincidental letter
  478. and off-air event, I've been interested in this case for several years.
  479.  Lastly, apparently the first underground school in the country was built in
  480. Artesia, New Mexico, at the height of the cold war. It admittedly is extreme
  481. conjecture on my part, but wouldn't it be interesting if the underground school
  482. was also built so that children could be observed,  monitored and studied by an
  483. alien presence?  Maybe....maybe not, but the Artesia-Lincoln connection is an
  484. interesting case.
  485.  Thanks for any information you may send my way. Again, the case is much more
  486. complex than what I've alluded to here. But perhaps this bit of information
  487. might be enough to cause you to contact me with any relavant information. I
  488. appreciate your interest and input, and ask your forgiveness at the lack of

  490. of the Fortean Research Center.
